However, with the advent of casinos using 7 or 8 decks of cards dealt from a shoe, many of the strategies in this book will not work well. The best point of the book is explaining the "basic strategy" of when to hit, stand, double-down, and split pairs based on the dealer's up card.

Following the basic strategy will give the player the best odds, but is no guarantee that the player will beat the dealer. Professor Thorpe published his book in the s.

I read it in the s long before there was an Amazon. When I read it, the casinos had already gone from single-deck Blackjack to a six deck shoe.

This change was solely because of Professor Thornton book. To this day, I still hear people say that you can't count cards with a 6 deck shoe.

They say this because they labor under the mistaken belief that counting cards involves memorizing the cards that are out of the deck.

In fact, counting cards had absolutely nothing to do with memorizing the cards. When you're counting, all you're doing is keeping track of how many big cards are out of the deck versus how many small cards.

When there is a disproportionate amount of small cards out of the deck, the advantage shifts to the player. When this happens the player makes a larger bet.

When the house has the advantage, the player makes a small bet. Therefore, it doesn't matter weather it is one deck, six decks, or decks.

The difference between counting with a single deck, and counting with a 6 deck shoe, is that the advantage gained from counting cards is dramatically reduced.

After I originally read Professor Thorpe's book, I crunched the numbers to determine the profitability of counting when playing with a six deck shoe.

Nevertheless, this is a very interesting book and well worth reading to learn about professors Thorpe's experiences when he took his system on the road to test it.

And, if you play a little Blackjack every once in awhile, counting will make it a little more fun. Word to the wise, get the full-sized paperback.

The mass media paperback edition is tiny. The stories might be older and the game has changed in casinos, but this was the first fundamental book to explain both basic and advanced strategies that influenced a legion of others.

The foundation of other advanced systems started here and a lot of the information is useful for reinforcement.

Just a classic book. While Thorp was far from the first person to count cards, his experience's and idea's were great.

Even though single deck games now either suck or don't exist, this book is still worth it. This is a must read for any blackjack enthusiast.

System is still relevant decades later after multiple rules changes made by the gaming industry to beat Dr. Thorp's system.

Great historical view, easy to understand the probability theory. If you love blackjack, you must read this book.

Doesn't include information for tables dealing from shoes up to 8 decks which is primarily what is used in Tahoe. Also incorrect in rules as they apply to splitting pairs.

I just got back from Tahoe Solit them, got another 2. Split again. Got yet another 2. You guessed it! Got one more 2! Its rules prevent a fast shuffle, and there is very little opportunity for hanky-panky.

Thorp has now come up with a system to beat it, and the system seems to work. It has also been spotted and barred from play in two casinos.

Could it be bye-bye to baccarat, too? Thorp himself now uses a combination of wraparound glasses and a beard to change his appearance on successive Las Vegas visits.

The mob-connected sharpie offered the young professor a deal: he would put up the money, if Thorp would put his theory to action and card-count their way to millions.

I read the most up to date version of this off Amazon and although Ed Thorp does include some updates things like casinos using 6 deck shoes now and other rule variations , most of the information is still good enough to beat the house.

A good introduction to the basic analysis of blackjack, the so-called "basic strategy", which involves no need for card counting.

This book is what put Edward Thorpe on the map, from obscure mathematics professor to the father of modern analysis of gambling.

Much of the basic strategy is visualized as a type of automata, that explains when a player should stand, draw, or double.

After going through the details of this strategy, Thorpe also goes through other strategies, which may include A good introduction to the basic analysis of blackjack, the so-called "basic strategy", which involves no need for card counting.

For the tables, there's a minor issue of displaying probabilities without the leading decimal, very odd style choice, but not a big concern. Also, if one purchases the audiobook, be sure to also get the kindle copy, and follow or re-read via the eye.

This book, like most text with any technical material, is challenging to grok purely with the ear. Jul 08, Michael Lawrence rated it really liked it Recommends it for: blackjack players.

Shelves: gambling. A must read for any blackjack player. This book was the center of a lot of drama over counting cards and what is to be considered cheating the game or casino.

Like I said, a must read for all blackjack players. Nov 29, Bethany Green rated it liked it Shelves: finished. I had to read it for a Math class in college -- we were analyzing Black Jack.
